Welcome at the 30th ICTCT Workshop webpage will be held in Olomouc, Czech Republic on 26 – 27 October 2017. The topic is “Traffic safety and the City” – How to enhance traffic safety and liveability in urban areas?

In this workshop we want to look at all road user groups in the city and how they interact. However, not only road users are in our focus but also authorities and policy makers. What processes are problematic, where can, or should, things be improved, and how and by whom. Presentations should as much as possible be based on empirical studies providing multidimensional assessment of behaviour and interaction of road users and interdependencies with infrastructure and the acting of administration and decision makers. The goal is to improve the understanding of factors that enhance or impede traffic safety and liveability in inhabited areas and, possibly, to offer solutions.

The discussions will highlight the following key issues:

• Problems of the different groups of vulnerable road users (especially children, elderly people, persons with limited mobility) and possibilities to mitigate them;
• How to make a road safety in the city an issue in the sense that administration and decision makers feel the responsibility? How to raise awareness?
• How to enhance the involvement of the public in the traffic safety discussion? How to communicate and introduce change in the society?
• Discuss to which degree traffic safety is a central part of liveability of urban areas and how the interrelation between these two aspects has to be considered both in analysis work and in connection with the development and implementation of measures;
• Why must exploration/analysis of the problem precede solutions? The technical vs. the psychological/social scientific look on “what we know” and “what we can take for given”.

The workshop is organised in close co-operation with the Palacký University in Olomouc (www.upol.cz) in Olomouc, Czech Republic.
